Declan Rice scored an 82nd-minute equaliser as Arsenal came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in their UEFA Champions League encounter at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
The England international struck late in the second half to deny Bayern victory after Harry Kane had put the German champions ahead from the penalty spot.
The result extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run in Champions League league-phase and group-stage matches to 14 games.
Arsenal took the lead in the 25th minute through Eberechi Eze, who came on for the injured Bukayo Saka before finishing a pass from Martin Odegaard.
Saka was forced off in the 10th minute after appearing to suffer a thigh injury while attempting to play a pass.
His withdrawal prompted Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to introduce Eze, who made an immediate impact.
However, Bayern responded through Alphonso Davies, who levelled the score in the 35th minute after being played through by Kane.
The hosts continued to threaten after the break, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya produced important saves to keep his side in contention.
Arsenal also came close to scoring when Bruno Guimaraes met a corner with a header, only for Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to make an impressive intervention to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
Bayern eventually took the lead in the 61st minute when Kane converted from the penalty spot after Jurrien Timber handled the ball inside the box.
The goal was Kane’s 16th in 22 appearances against Arsenal and extended his remarkable Champions League scoring run to 10 consecutive matches.
With Arsenal facing the prospect of defeat, Rice stepped up in the closing stages to restore parity.
A well-worked attacking move involving Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres created the opportunity for the midfielder to drive into the penalty area and fire past Neuer from a tight angle.
Arsenal pushed for a late winner, with Timber testing Neuer from outside the box in the 89th minute, but Bayern’s goalkeeper kept out the effort to ensure the points were shared.
The draw came after Arsenal had faced criticism over their style of play following a narrow 1-0 victory against Nottingham Forest.
Against Bayern, however, the Gunners displayed greater attacking ambition and finished with more possession and shots than their hosts.
Arteta praised his players for their performance, describing the encounter as one of the highest levels his team had reached, given the quality of the opposition and the demands of the match.
He also acknowledged the difficulty of securing a positive result in Munich, noting Bayern’s impressive home record in the Champions League.
Despite the encouraging result, Saka’s injury remained a major concern for Arsenal.
Arteta admitted after the match that the club’s medical staff were worried about the winger’s condition, particularly because of the sharp pain he experienced before leaving the pitch.
The Arsenal manager said the injury did not look promising but stressed that further assessment would be needed to establish its severity.
Arsenal will now turn their attention to their next fixture against Everton as they prepare for a demanding run of matches before the November international break.
