LASK stun Sporting 3-2 to claim first UCL win

Austrian side LASK recorded their first UEFA Champions League victory after coming from behind to defeat Sporting CP 3-2 in their league-phase encounter on Wednesday.

Sporting, who had won their opening two matches in the competition, suffered their first defeat after surrendering an early lead at the Estádio José Alvalade.

Luis Suárez gave the Portuguese side the advantage in the fifth minute, converting a penalty after referee Nick Walsh ruled that Nestory Irankunda had been fouled.

However, LASK responded in the 15th minute when Christoph Lang levelled the score with a well-placed finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Both sides went into the break level at 1-1, but the visitors took control after the restart with two goals in quick succession.

Sasa Kalajdžić put LASK ahead in the 63rd minute, finishing a counter-attacking move with a precise effort into the far corner.

Five minutes later, K. Daněk extended the visitors’ advantage, capitalising on another swift attack to fire the ball past the Sporting goalkeeper at the near post.

Sporting pushed for a comeback, and Suárez scored his second goal of the night in the 89th minute to reduce the deficit.

Despite the late pressure from the hosts, LASK held on to secure a memorable victory and their first-ever away win in Europe’s premier club competition.

The result also ended Sporting’s perfect start to the Champions League campaign, while LASK claimed their first points in the league phase.

Sporting will face Shakhtar Donetsk in their next Champions League fixture on November 3, while LASK will host Slovan Bratislava on the same date.
