Real Madrid maintained their perfect start to the UEFA Champions League campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday.
Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler, Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomande were on target as Jose Mourinho’s men secured another three points in the league phase, while Tidiam Gomis scored Leipzig’s only goal.
Leipzig started brightly and threatened to take the lead on several occasions, but Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced important saves to deny Christopher Nkunku and Romulo.
The hosts eventually broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute through Silva, who scored his first goal for the Spanish giants since joining from Manchester City during the summer.
Real doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half when Güler turned in a cross from Mbappé, giving the home side greater control of the contest.
Mbappé extended Madrid’s lead in the 83rd minute, curling a fine effort into the corner from the edge of the penalty area to register his 12th goal in 12 appearances this season.
Leipzig responded two minutes later as Gomis finished off a well-worked move to reduce the deficit and offer the visitors a brief consolation.
However, Madrid quickly restored their three-goal cushion through substitute Diomande, who struck a spectacular volley from outside the penalty area in the 87th minute against his former club.
The victory keeps Real Madrid’s 100 per cent record intact in the Champions League, further strengthening their position in the league-phase standings.
Madrid will now turn their attention to Sunday’s El Clasico against Barcelona before travelling to Greece to face AEK Athens on November 4.
Leipzig, meanwhile, will look to recover when they host Manchester City on the same day.
