Turkish club Trabzonspor are on the verge of completing the permanent signing of Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu after reaching an agreement with English side Southampton.
Onuachu initially joined Southampton from Belgian side Genk in January 2023 but struggled to find his footing in the Premier League.
However, a loan move to Trabzonspor for the 2023/2024 campaign revived his fortunes.
The towering 6ft 7in striker was in red-hot form during his stint in Turkey, scoring 17 goals and assisting four more in 25 matches across all competitions.
His performances reignited interest from Trabzonspor, who had previously failed to meet Southampton’s €10 million asking price last summer.
Unable to seal a permanent transfer at the time, the 31-year-old returned to the Saints ahead of the 2024/2025 season. But following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League, the club has softened its stance, making room for renewed negotiations.
According to renowned transfer insider, Fabrizio Romano, both clubs have now agreed to an €8 million deal, roughly ₦14 billion, moving the transfer significantly closer to completion.
“Understand Trabzonspor have agreed a fee with Southampton in the region of €8m for Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu. Negotiation on going on personal terms,” Romano revealed via X.
With a fee now settled, Trabzonspor are focusing on finalizing personal terms with Onuachu. Should talks conclude successfully, the Nigerian forward is expected to return to a club where he found renewed confidence and goal-scoring form.
The former Genk star will be eager to hit the ground running once more in the Turkish Super Lig as he eyes a strong campaign and a potential recall to the Super Eagles setup.
