President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from office as the Inspector-General of Police, according to senior presidency sources.
According to The PUNCH, officials familiar with the development said the President asked Egbetokun to step aside during a meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, with a formal announcement expected shortly.
One of the aides confirmed the decision, saying,
“Yes, he has been asked to step aside. An official statement is being finalised and should be released soon.”
Another presidency insider also indicated that arrangements were underway to announce the change in leadership.
Efforts to get an official reaction from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as calls and messages sent to him were not returned as of the time of filing this report.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, also did not respond to inquiries.
Sources within the police hierarchy suggested that a replacement may already have been considered, with Tunji Disu reportedly contacted in connection with the position.
“There are indications that a successor has been identified. We are all waiting for official confirmation,” a senior police source said.
Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023.
His tenure later generated public debate after he attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 in September 2024 but remained in office following amendments to the Police Act that allowed his stay to be extended.
