Seven people have been killed and two others injured in a multiple-vehicle accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The crash occurred around Kara in the early hours of Monday and involved three vehicles: a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC truck, a white MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number JJJ920YA.
The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Superintendent Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi.
According to the FRSC, all nine people involved in the accident were male, with seven losing their lives and two sustaining injuries.
The agency said its Ibafo Outpost received information about the crash at about 12:04 a.m. and arrived at the scene approximately five minutes later.
The FRSC described the incident as a fatal multiple road traffic crash, adding that preliminary findings pointed to a speed violation as the likely cause, although investigations are ongoing.
The deceased were evacuated from the scene by the Ogun State Ambulance Service, while the injured victims were taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The vehicles involved were subsequently handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Ibafo for further investigation.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to exercise greater caution, particularly when driving at night.
He advised drivers of articulated vehicles to avoid excessive speed and maintain sufficient distance from other vehicles.
Ogunjobi said, “Motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, should avoid excessive speed, maintain safe following distances and remain vigilant at all times.”
He also warned that poor visibility and driver fatigue at night could increase the likelihood of road crashes.
The sector commander expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.
