Five men have died following a head-on collision involving a Toyota Camry and an Iveco truck on the Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday around Sawmill, close to Mowo Bus Stop.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said it received a distress call about the incident at 5:16am and promptly deployed its Dolphin Response Team from the Igando base.
According to LASEMA, responders found that the Toyota Camry, with registration number FKJ 630KS, had collided with an Iveco truck marked T28081 LA.
The agency said preliminary findings indicated that excessive speed and reckless driving by the Camry driver led to the crash.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was caused by over-speeding and reckless driving on the part of the Toyota Camry driver.”
He explained that the driver reportedly lost control of the car, crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the truck.
Oke-Osanyintolu added, “Regrettably, the impact of the collision resulted in the death of five adult males who were occupants of the Toyota Camry.”
He said the bodies were recovered from the wreckage and handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further necessary action.
The rescue operation involved LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the FRSC and officers from the Morogbo Police Division.
Two tow trucks were also deployed to remove the wreckage, while the vehicles involved were taken to the Morogbo Police Division.
LASEMA said the affected section of the expressway had been cleared and reopened to traffic.
The agency urged motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving practices, particularly during the early hours when visibility may be reduced.
Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged road users to prioritise safety.
