Sanwo-Olu inspects vandalised Festac-Alakija bridge

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inspected the Festac-Alakija Bridge following the vandalism of parts of the infrastructure, assuring residents that the structure remains safe.

Sanwo-Olu visited the bridge on Saturday to assess the extent of the damage caused by suspected vandals.

He was accompanied by contractors working on the bridge, members of the Lagos State Executive Council and some local government chairmen.

The inspection followed the circulation of a video showing parts of the bridge allegedly vandalised, with concrete sections broken open and reinforcing steel bars removed.

Speaking after the assessment, the governor assured Lagos residents that the damage had not compromised the structural integrity of the bridge.

“The Governor assured residents of the sound integrity of the bridge,” his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said in a statement shared on X.

Sanwo-Olu, however, warned that those responsible for the vandalism, as well as individuals purchasing stolen government property, would face legal consequences.

“He, however, warned that the full weight of the law would be brought upon vandals and buyers of vandalised government property, urging people to desist from unscrupulous practices,” Akosile added.

The governor had earlier directed security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for the attack on the public infrastructure, describing the vandalism as a criminal act.

Following the directive, no fewer than 27 suspected hoodlums were reportedly arrested in connection with the incident.

The Festac-Alakija Bridge links Festac Town with Alakija and serves as an important transport route for residents and motorists in the area.

The governor’s latest inspection was aimed at assessing the extent of the damage and reinforcing the government’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure across Lagos State.
