The Ondo State Police Command has arrested 10 suspects in connection with a violent robbery and attempted assassination of the traditional ruler of Igoba Community in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred late Thursday night when a group of armed hoodlums stormed the community, attacking residents and looting valuables at gunpoint.
Several people were injured during the attack, while the monarch, Oba Adinlewa John, reportedly escaped an attempt on his life.
Confirming the arrests in a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Superintendent Olayinka Ayanlade, said the suspects were apprehended following swift action by officers of the command.
“The Ondo State Police Command wishes to inform the public of the arrest of 10 suspects in connection with a violent attack on the Igoba Community at about 11:30 pm,” Ayanlade stated.
“On the said day, a group of hoodlums, armed with firearms, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons, invaded the community with the intent to wreak havoc. In the course of their violent activities, one Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo was attacked, injured, and dispossessed of her belongings.”
Ayanlade explained that the attackers later advanced to the palace of His Royal Highness, Oba Adinlewa John, where they attempted to assassinate the monarch but were unsuccessful.
“The assailants further advanced to the palace of His Royal Highness, Oba Adinlewa John of Igoba, where they attempted to assassinate the monarch. Fortunately, the royal father narrowly escaped the life-threatening assault,” he said.
Following a distress call, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, ordered the immediate deployment of tactical units to the area, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations.
“Upon receipt of the distress call, the Commissioner of Police promptly directed all necessary operational assets and manpower to the scene. The tactical team effected the arrest of 10 suspects,” the statement added.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that the suspects had confessed to their involvement in the attack and would be arraigned in court after the conclusion of investigations.
Items recovered from the suspects included two locally made pistols, a single-barrel gun, several rounds of live ammunition, assorted charms, knives, and machetes.
Ayanlade reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
“The command will continue to pursue criminal elements with every available resource to ensure that communities across Ondo State remain safe and peaceful,” he said.
