Police foil attempted secret burial, arrest three over alleged murder in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged killing of a 38-year-old man, Stanley Okirie, and an attempt to secretly bury his body in Akute, Ifo Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, identified as Maureen Okirie, 35, Salia Karikari, 15, and Jubril Karikari, 12, were apprehended by operatives of the Ajuwon Division following a tip-off from concerned residents.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, noting that the arrest was made after intelligence reports of suspicious activity in the area.

“Detectives of the Ajuwon Division acted on credible information and arrived at the scene, where one of the suspects was caught attempting to bury a blood-stained corpse in a shallow grave,” Babaseyi said.

He explained that preliminary findings revealed that the victim had sustained a serious head injury.

“Initial examination suggests that the deceased was attacked with a wooden pestle, which has now been recovered as evidence,” he added.

According to the police, investigations indicate that the suspects, who are reportedly related to the victim, may have been involved not only in the killing but also in efforts to conceal the crime.

“The body has been deposited at Life Channel Mortuary in Olambe for autopsy, while the suspects remain in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and prosecution,” Babaseyi stated.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, condemned the act, describing it as “cruel, inhumane, and deeply disturbing,” especially given the alleged involvement of family members.

“Such acts of violence and attempts to cover up crimes will not be tolerated. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” Ojajuni said.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies. “We encourage members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities to aid our efforts in combating crime,” he added.
