NDC to inaugurate presidential campaign council October 20

The Nigeria Democratic Congress says it will inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council on October 20 as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, disclosed this on Saturday during a press briefing in Abuja, explaining that the inauguration would take place during a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee.

He said the meeting would also ratify key decisions concerning the party’s preparations for the elections, while certificates of return would be presented to its candidates.

Cleopas added that the party planned to host a dinner to strengthen unity and cooperation among its members ahead of the polls.

He dismissed suggestions that the party was not actively preparing for the elections, describing such claims as propaganda.

“The propaganda that our party is not committed to the elections is definitely a sign of fear in the camp of the ruling party,” he said.

The chairman explained that the party was taking its time to select suitable members for the campaign council, given the importance of the forthcoming elections.

“It is better to get it right. It is a sensitive election that we are going into. And we must check characters,” he said.

Cleopas also maintained that the party had continued to engage stakeholders and supporters through consultations and town hall meetings, citing recent activities in Sokoto and Kaduna.

He said the party was scheduled to visit Enugu on October 15 as part of its ongoing engagements.

On the party’s presidential ticket, Cleopas reaffirmed the leadership’s support for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who emerged as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates, respectively.

He said the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, alongside members of the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee, remained committed to the ticket.

“Our presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate today have the mandate of the party to lead us into political battle, on a rescue mission for this country,” he said.

The NDC chairman described the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as one that reflected Nigeria’s religious, ethnic and generational diversity.

He further warned that the party would resist any alleged attempts to manipulate the electoral process before, during and after the 2027 elections.

Cleopas said the party would remain politically active until the inauguration of the next administration on May 29, 2027, expressing confidence in the NDC’s prospects in the elections.
