South African singer, Tyla, made history at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, becoming the first artist to win the same category twice since its inception.
The 24-year-old took home the prestigious award at the Crypto.com Arena for her single “Push 2 Start”, marking her second triumph in this category after her 2024 win for the global hit “Water.”
This milestone firmly establishes Tyla as one of Africa’s most prominent music exports on the international stage.
Speaking to Billboard after her win on Sunday, Tyla reflected on the significance of the achievement, not only for herself but for African artists worldwide.
“I’m so grateful. This is insane. It just shows me how far we can take it. Being from where I’m from, we really have a chance, and that’s just amazing,” she said, visibly emotional.
Tyla also stressed the importance of seeing more African musicians celebrated globally and the need for continued recognition and opportunities.
“When I was young, I wanted to see my girls getting Grammys and everything, and we’ve got that, but we need more. I’m excited to see the rest of our African superstars who are killing it right now be there as well. We are coming,” she added.
Her historic win is more than a personal victory; it represents the rising influence of African music on the global stage. As Tyla continues to break barriers, her message is clear: the world is ready to welcome more African artists to shine.
