Man City hold mental edge over Arsenal in EPL title race – Rooney

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester City hold a crucial psychological edge over Arsenal in the ongoing Premier League title race, pointing to their experience and composure in high-pressure situations.

Ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster clash at the Etihad Stadium, the former Manchester United captain stressed that City’s winning pedigree under Pep Guardiola gives them a mental advantage over Mikel Arteta’s side.

“I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got. They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players,” Rooney said on his The Wayne Rooney Show.

He added that Arsenal could be vulnerable mentally if results begin to slip, noting how negative thoughts can quickly creep into a team’s mindset during difficult spells.

“They will be worried because when you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking ‘Where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from?’ That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance.”

City boosted their title hopes with a commanding 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, closing the gap on the league leaders to six points while still holding a game in hand, Sunday’s showdown with Arsenal.

Despite that momentum, recent inconsistencies, including a defeat to AFC Bournemouth, have raised questions about their form as the title race intensifies.

Rooney described the upcoming encounter as a potential “title decider,” suggesting the winner could seize control of the race.

He noted that while a draw might still suit Arsenal, Arteta’s men must remain disciplined and defensively resolute.

“Whether the fans like that type of football or not, they have to do anything to stop City winning. They need to be resilient enough to stop City from scoring,” he said.
