Lagos task force seizes 66 okadas for violating transport rules

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, popularly known as the Lagos Taskforce, has impounded 66 commercial motorcycles for allegedly operating on routes where okada activities are prohibited.

The motorcycles were seized during an enforcement operation carried out on Monday at different locations across Lagos Island.

The Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed this in a statement issued by the agency’s spokesperson, Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Tuesday.

According to Akerele, the operation covered areas including CMS Bus Stop, Obalende, Osborne Roundabout, Abraham Adesanya Road, Lekki-Ajah Expressway and the Lagos Coastal Road.

He said the operators were found using restricted routes and creating obstructions and other disturbances for motorists and road users.

“During the operation, 66 commercial motorcycles were impounded, while normalcy was restored in the affected areas,” Akerele said.

The chairman explained that the agency had stepped up intelligence gathering and tactical enforcement operations to stop illegal commercial motorcycle activities on restricted highways, bridges and other prohibited routes.

He said some operators had adopted various methods to evade enforcement officers but noted that the Taskforce’s intelligence-led operations would continue to frustrate such efforts.

Akerele also warned that future enforcement exercises would extend to passengers who patronise commercial motorcycles in violation of the state’s transport regulations.

He reiterated that the impounded motorcycles would be forfeited to the Lagos State Government through court proceedings, in line with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

The chairman assured residents that enforcement would continue across the state until operators comply fully with the regulations.
