The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission has announced October 17, 2026, as the date for the conduct of local government elections across the state.

The Chairman of the commission, Mr Nderi Mamman, made the disclosure during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday in Lokoja, the state capital.

Mamman explained that the election would cover all 21 local government areas and 239 electoral wards in the state, with voters expected to elect chairmen and councillors.

He noted that the issuance of the election notice complied with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which requires election notices to be published not later than 360 days before the date of the election.

“The issuance of this notice is in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act. On October 24, we will release a detailed timetable and schedule of activities for the 2026 local government elections,” Mamman said.

“The timetable will include dates for party primaries, submission of candidates’ lists, publication of nominated candidates, commencement and end of campaigns, and other pre-election activities.”

The KOSIEC chairman also emphasized that only political parties duly registered and recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission would be eligible to sponsor candidates for the elections, in line with the Electoral Act and the KOSIEC Law.

Mamman urged political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders to adhere strictly to electoral guidelines to ensure a credible, transparent, and peaceful process across the state.
