INEC to brief Nigerians on 2027 election preparations as 100-day countdown begins

The Independent National Electoral Commission will on Tuesday hold a national stakeholders’ meeting and press conference to mark 100 days to Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The engagement, scheduled for October 6 in Abuja, is expected to provide an update on the commission’s preparations, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, election logistics and measures to strengthen the credibility of the polls.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, the commission said the meeting would promote wider engagement with stakeholders ahead of the elections.

INEC said its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, would address participants at the event.

“The Commission will provide updates on preparations for the elections, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and critical measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process,” the statement said.

The commission said the meeting would bring together political party leaders, security agencies, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society organisations, development partners, election observers and disability rights groups.

Youth organisations, religious and traditional leaders as well as media executives are also expected to participate.

According to INEC, the engagement reflects its commitment to transparency and collaboration with stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on March 6.

The commission has already released its electoral timetable covering political party primaries, nomination of candidates and other activities leading to the elections.

The meeting will take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja from 10am.
