The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled September 19, 2026, for legislative by-elections to fill five vacant seats across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states.
INEC announced the date in a statement posted on its official X account on Friday.
The commission said the affected constituencies are Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi; and Udu State Constituency in Delta.
According to INEC, voting in the affected areas will commence at 8:30am and close at 2:30pm at designated polling units.
The commission said the vacancies arose from different circumstances, including the death, resignation, defection and election of former lawmakers to other positions.
In Gombe, the federal constituency seat became vacant following the death of its representative, Yaya Bauchi Tongo, in June 2026.
The Sakwa State Constituency seat in Bauchi became vacant after the death of its former occupant, while the lawmaker representing Disina resigned to contest a chairmanship election.
In Delta State, the House of Assembly declared the Udu constituency seat vacant after its former representative, Collins Egbetamah, defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
The Dawakin Kudu seat in Kano became vacant after its former occupant, Rabiu Shuaibu, left the state assembly to contest the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency election.
Shuaibu later won the federal constituency by-election conducted in June, defeating candidates of the Allied Peoples Movement and the Labour Party.
INEC said the September 19 exercise would therefore be used to elect new representatives for the five vacant legislative seats.
The commission stated, “The affected constituencies are Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.”
INEC added that the elections would take place at polling units within the affected constituencies, beginning at 8:30am and ending at 2:30pm.
