Morgan Rogers continued his dazzling run of form with a superb double as Aston Villa edged Manchester United 2-1 on Sunday, extending their winning streak across all competitions to 10 matches and reinforcing their Premier League title credentials.
Fresh from inspiring last week’s victory at West Ham with a fine finish followed by a spectacular strike, the 23-year-old England international delivered again to keep Villa within three points of league leaders Arsenal heading into the Christmas break.
Rogers broke the deadlock late in the first half, gliding in from the left before curling a delightful effort beyond the United goalkeeper.
The visitors briefly restored parity before the interval when Matheus Cunha capitalised after Matty Cash was caught in possession.
Villa, however, regained control after the restart and made their pressure count when Rogers struck decisively for a second time, sealing a seventh consecutive Premier League win for Unai Emery’s side.
Manchester United arrived at Villa Park depleted by the absence of seven senior players, and the afternoon worsened when captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off at half-time with what appeared to be a hamstring issue.
The setback was compounded by the late withdrawal of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who missed the match after suffering a calf problem on the eve of the fixture.
