EPL: Everton edge Newcastle 3-2

Everton staged a dramatic display of resilience to claim a second successive win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park, emerging 3-2 victors and leaving the Magpies to suffer a third consecutive home league defeat for the first time since February 2021.

The Toffees, keen to bounce back after Monday’s defeat to Manchester United, started the brighter of the two sides.

Just nine minutes in, Iliman Ndiaye unleashed a powerful 30-yard strike that narrowly missed the target, setting the tone for Everton’s attacking intent.

The visitors were rewarded for their early pressure before the 20-minute mark when James Garner delivered a precise ball that Jarrad Branthwaite glanced into the far corner, netting his first goal since April 2024.

Newcastle, who had only Burnley worse in conceding first-half goals this season, found themselves on the back foot.

However, Branthwaite’s joy was short-lived. Shortly after the half-hour mark, a Jacob Ramsey effort from outside the box took a deflection off the defender, looping over Jordan Pickford to level the scores.

The deadlock lasted barely two minutes, as Dwight McNeil’s 30-yard shot was fumbled by Nick Pope, allowing Beto to tap in from close range and restore Everton’s lead.

Newcastle, fresh off qualifying for the UEFA Champions League last 16, have struggled domestically, having lost four of their previous five Premier League games.

With 25 minutes remaining, Beto almost put Everton further ahead, but his close-range attempt grazed the crossbar.

The match seemed to be winding down until the final 10 minutes brought stunning drama. Jacob Murphy volleyed home from close range, with a slight deflection off Idrissa Gueye beating Pickford and giving Newcastle hope of a point.

Yet Everton responded instantly: less than a minute later, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s cross found Thierno Barry, whose shot deflected off Lewis Hall and into the net, sending Everton fans into ecstasy.

The Toffees sealed the win thanks to a sensational last-ditch save from Pickford, who tipped Sandro Tonali’s volley against the bar.

David Moyes’ side have now lost just once in their last ten Premier League away games and have extended their unbeaten streak at St James’ Park to three matches.

The victory moves Everton up to eighth in the table, keeping them firmly in the hunt for European qualification, while Newcastle remain 12th after their fourth successive home league defeat.
