Court adjourns ruling on El-Rufai’s bail application to June

A Kaduna State High Court has postponed its ruling on the bail application of former governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to the first week of June 2026.

The adjournment was announced by Justice Darius Khobo during proceedings on Tuesday in a case involving allegations of financial crimes and abuse of office brought against El-Rufai by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

El-Rufai, who appeared in court under tight security, arrived alongside operatives of the anti-corruption agency and the Department of State Services. Movement around the court premises was restricted as supporters gathered outside during the hearing.

Following the session, his counsel, Ukpon Akpan, criticised the repeated delays in ruling on the bail application, alleging political interference.
“The continued adjournment of this bail hearing raises serious concerns and appears to be politically motivated,” Akpan said.

The case had earlier been scheduled for ruling on April 21 after arguments from both sides were concluded, but the court shifted the decision to June.

The development comes amid earlier claims by the former governor that there were attempts to implicate him in criminal activities and frustrate his release.

“There are clear malicious orchestrations aimed at ensuring my continued detention,” El-Rufai had alleged.

He also referenced a previous incident in February, claiming there were plans to arrest him upon his return to Nigeria from Cairo, which he described as part of a troubling sequence of events.

The court is now expected to deliver its ruling on the bail application in June as the legal proceedings continue.
