Bundesliga: Werder Bremen stun Wolfsburg 2-1 in comeback win

Werder Bremen produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat Wolfsburg 2-1 in their Bundesliga clash on Friday night.

The visitors had looked on course for a much-needed win after Swedish forward Mattias Svanberg coolly finished off a swift counterattack in the 28th minute.

However, Wolfsburg’s fragile form resurfaced in the closing stages as Bremen turned the game around in thrilling fashion.

Jens Stage sparked the comeback with a smartly placed header seven minutes from time before substitute Samual Mbangula sealed all three points with a stunning volley deep into stoppage time.

The result lifted Bremen to seventh on the league table, while Wolfsburg’s dismal run extended to seven defeats in their last eight matches, increasing the pressure on under-fire coach Paul Simonis.

Simonis, who joined in June after guiding Go Ahead Eagles to a surprise Dutch Cup triumph, has struggled to replicate that success in Germany, with the club’s poor Bundesliga campaign compounded by an embarrassing German Cup exit to second-tier Holstein Kiel.
