Bayern Munich, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has admitted responsibility for his costly mistake that allowed Augsburg to score the fastest goal in Bundesliga history during their 2-2 draw on Saturday.
The veteran goalkeeper endured a disastrous start to the encounter after losing possession inside his penalty area within the opening nine seconds.
Augsburg midfielder, Robin Fellhauer capitalised on the error, dispossessing Neuer before rolling the ball into an unguarded net.
The goal set a new Bundesliga record for the earliest goal conceded in the competition’s history, leaving Bayern with an immediate setback in the derby.
Neuer did not attempt to shift the blame after the match, openly acknowledging his contribution to the early goal.
“The first goal we conceded was a silly mistake by me,” Neuer admitted.
“Not many of us have had a game like today.”
The goalkeeper also expressed frustration over the number of goals Bayern had scored only for them to be disallowed.
“It was strange that we scored so many goals that were then ruled out.”
Despite conceding almost immediately, Neuer said he remained optimistic that Bayern could recover and secure victory.
“I still had hope, because it was the first minute,” Neuer explained.
“The chance we could still turn the game around is big.”
He added that Bayern created enough opportunities to win but failed to convert them, while tight offside decisions also worked against the team.
“I think we had the chances but just didn’t take them. There was a bit of bad luck with the tight offsides.”
Bayern fought back through goals from Ismael Saibari and substitute Nathaniel Brown, but Rodrigo Ribeiro scored in the second half to earn Augsburg a share of the points.
Ribeiro converted the rebound after Neuer had parried Calvin Brackelmann’s attempt.
Neuer will now seek to put the costly mistake behind him as Bayern prepare to face Viking in the Champions League on Tuesday.
