Bundesliga: Frankfurt hold Werder Bremen in six-goal thriller

Werder Bremen ended their four-game scoring drought but were left frustrated after surrendering a late lead in a breathless 3-3 Bundesliga draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, who also extended their winless run to four matches (D3, L1).

Both teams were desperate for a response, and it was Frankfurt who struck almost instantly.

Just 51 seconds in, Ritsu Doan’s delivery was headed back into danger by Nathaniel Brown, allowing on-loan forward Arnaud Kalimuendo to cleverly flick the ball over Mio Backhaus for his first goal since arriving from Nottingham Forest.

Rather than knock Werder off stride, the early setback sparked a positive reaction from the hosts. Justin Njinmah went close after latching onto a Jens Stage pass, dragging his shot wide, but he made no mistake soon after.

Yukinari Sugawara’s through ball released Njinmah again, and this time he nudged the ball past Nnamdi Collins before calmly sliding it under Kaua Santos to draw Werder level.

Werder carried the greater threat for the rest of the half, though Frankfurt’s fragile away defence managed to hold out until the break.

The hosts hoped to kick on after scoring for the first time in four outings, but instead fell behind again 10 minutes into the second period. Fares Chaibi floated a hopeful ball into the box, where Collins reacted quickest to poke it beyond Backhaus.

Frankfurt failed to capitalise further, with Chaibi missing a clear chance, and they were punished as Werder turned the contest around in a dramatic three-minute spell.

Stage equalised by powering a header from Samuel Mbangula’s free-kick over Santos, before the Weserstadion erupted again late on.

Romano Schmid burst into the area and selflessly teed up substitute Jovan Milosevic, who fired into the near corner for his first goal in just his second appearance.

However, Werder’s joy was short-lived. Deep into stoppage time, Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab cut the ball back for Ansgar Knauff to finish from close range, rescuing a point for Frankfurt at the death.

Neither side will feel satisfied after extending their respective winless runs, but Frankfurt may take some comfort from snatching a draw in the final moments.
