Bundesliga: Frankfurt edge Wolfsburg 2-1

Eintracht Frankfurt punished wasteful VfL Wolfsburg with a clinical display to claim a 2-1 victory at the Volkswagen Arena, condemning the hosts to another frustrating outing as they continue their winless run since January.

Wolfsburg had a golden opportunity to take an early lead when Mohamed Amoura capitalized on hesitation from goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.

After stealing possession, the ball fell kindly to Patrick Wimmer with an open goal at his mercy, but the Austrian lost his footing at the crucial moment, allowing Zetterer to recover and avert the danger.

That miss proved costly almost instantly, as Frankfurt threatened on the break. Arnaud Kalimuendo came close to punishing the hosts, but Kamil Grabara reacted swiftly to deny the French forward.

Despite Wolfsburg’s bright start, their lack of cutting edge in the final third soon caught up with them. In the 21st minute, Frankfurt struck against the run of play.

Ayoube Amaimouni teed up Oscar Højlund on the edge of the box, and his curling effort took a deflection off the post before finding the net to make it 1-0.

Frankfurt doubled their advantage just past the half-hour mark. A cleverly worked low free-kick found Jonathan Burkardt, whose initial effort was saved by Grabara, but Kalimuendo reacted quickest to slot home the rebound and make it 2-0.

The visitors nearly extended their lead further when Amaimouni thought he had added a third, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

At the other end, Wolfsburg continued to squander chances, with Wimmer again involved in a promising situation but unable to make it count.

After the break, Wolfsburg came out with renewed urgency. Lovro Majer, introduced at half-time, immediately made an impact, heading just over before seeing a dangerous free-kick tipped onto the bar by Zetterer.

Majer remained at the heart of Wolfsburg’s attacking efforts, carving out another chance for Aaron Zehnter, whose delicate chip drifted narrowly wide.

The hosts dominated possession and fired in 19 second-half attempts, but their finishing let them down, with only a handful testing Zetterer.

Wolfsburg eventually found a late breakthrough deep into stoppage time, as Dženan Pejčinović nodded home from close range after good work by Adam Daghim.

However, it proved nothing more than a consolation, as the final whistle sounded moments later.

The result lifts Frankfurt to seventh in the Bundesliga standings, while Wolfsburg’s struggles continue, leaving them 17th and dangerously close to the relegation zone with time running out to salvage their top-flight status.
