Eintracht Frankfurt’s struggles continued as their winless streak across all competitions stretched to nine games (D4, L5) following a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin in Albert Riera’s managerial debut.
After conceding at least two goals in each of their seven matches so far in 2026, Frankfurt needed a positive start at the vibrant Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Early in the game, play was briefly halted due to pyro from Union fans celebrating the club’s 60th anniversary, but the visitors pressed on, controlling possession and testing the hosts’ defence when Arnaud Kalimuendo’s fierce cross-shot skimmed the six-yard box.
Union, desperate to end an eight-game streak without scoring in the first half, gradually asserted themselves. Aljoscha Kemlein came closest with a long-range effort that Kaua Santos tipped over the bar.
Despite a tense and cautious first 45 minutes, neither side could break the deadlock as both defences held firm.
The second half mirrored the first, with Frankfurt dominating possession. They missed a golden chance when Oscar Hojlund skewed wide from eight yards following a precise Kalimuendo lay-off. Union, however, almost struck against the run of play, as Derrick Kohn’s angled shot rattled the near post.
Frankfurt eventually made their pressure count in the 84th minute. Nathaniel Brown seized on a loose ball in the box and unleashed a thunderous left-footed strike into the corner beyond Frederik Ronnow.
Their lead proved fleeting, though, as Hojlund’s foul on Rani Khedira saw him sent off with a second yellow.
From the resulting penalty, Leopold Querfeld calmly slotted the ball past Santos to restore parity.
With a numerical advantage, Union pushed for a late winner, but substitute Andrej Ilic’s close-range effort went wide, leaving both sides to share the spoils.
The draw extended Frankfurt’s winless run to nine matches, while Union remain without a victory in 2026 after six games (D4, L2).
