Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen in a tightly contested Bundesliga clash, eventually breaking through late after a dominant but wasteful display in front of goal.
Daniel Svensson was among the new additions to the starting XI and immediately made an impact, winning possession high up in Bremen’s half to spark an early wave of pressure that set the tone for Dortmund’s aggressive start.
That early spell produced a triple chance, with Serhou Guirassy’s effort parried by Mio Backhaus before
Samuele Inacio’s follow-up was brilliantly tipped onto the post. Jobe Bellingham then fired the rebound narrowly wide as Dortmund came within inches of an opening goal inside the first six minutes.
The pressure continued through Maxi Beier’s work on the right, with Guirassy again denied at close range by another outstanding save from Backhaus, who repeatedly kept Bremen alive.
Werder Bremen offered little sustained threat but had occasional moments in Dortmund’s box, including a scramble in the 19th minute and an offside headed attempt from Amos Pieper.
Despite those flashes, Dortmund controlled possession and dictated play, finishing the first half with 53% possession and a clear advantage in shots on target.
The second half resumed at a high tempo, with Felix Nmecha launching a quick attack from the centre circle that released Inacio and eventually Guirassy, whose low effort was again stopped superbly by Backhaus.
The Bremen goalkeeper continued his outstanding display with another sharp save from Guirassy’s header, underlining his influence on the match.
Dortmund finally made the breakthrough in the 59th minute when Nico Schlotterbeck switched play with a diagonal pass to Julian Ryerson, whose cross was met by Guirassy, who headed in at the near post after beating substitute Marvin Friedl.
Dortmund pushed for a second, with Nmecha narrowly missing from a Ryerson delivery, while Bremen briefly thought they had equalised only for the effort to be ruled offside.
Late on, Gregor Kobel was called into action to preserve the lead before Dortmund sealed the win in stoppage time. Fabio Silva sparked a flowing counterattack,
Julian Brandt helped carry the move forward, and Karim Adeyemi unselfishly squared for Yan Couto to finish calmly, wrapping up a deserved 2-0 win for Dortmund.
