Bayern Munich were held to a surprising 0-0 draw by newly promoted Schalke 04 on Saturday, as the home side produced a determined defensive display to frustrate the Bundesliga champions.
Bayern dominated possession during the opening half but struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Alphonso Davies sent an effort wide, while Nathaniel Brown was denied by an impressive save from Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius.
Schalke also showed attacking intent, with Adil Aouchiche coming close to breaking the deadlock from a free-kick that Manuel Neuer did well to keep out.
Bayern almost took the lead shortly before the interval when Luis Díaz found himself through on goal, but the forward failed to make proper contact with his attempt.
Vincent Kompany responded by introducing Harry Kane at the start of the second half, before Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala were brought on shortly afterwards in an attempt to unlock the Schalke defence.
The changes increased Bayern’s pressure, but Schalke remained organised and refused to concede despite spending long periods defending deep.
The result earns Schalke a valuable point in their first home game back in the Bundesliga, while Bayern move to four points from their opening two matches.
