Super Eagles defender, Felix Agu, played a match-winning role off the bench as Werder Bremen edged VfL Wolfsburg 1-0 in Saturday’s Bundesliga encounter.
The 26-year-old was introduced after the break and quickly made his presence felt, setting up the only goal of the game to seal Bremen’s third victory in four outings, a timely boost in their battle to avoid relegation.
Wolfsburg, aiming to snap a worrying run without a win, controlled much of the first half and created the better opportunities.
However, their inability to convert chances meant both sides went into halftime level.
The contest remained finely balanced until Bremen manager Daniel Thioune made a decisive double substitution in the 61st minute, bringing on Agu and Karim Coulibaly.
The move paid off almost instantly. Just seven minutes later, Agu slipped a well-weighted pass into the area for Justin Njinmah, who took a touch before drilling a left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
That goal ultimately proved the difference, lifting Bremen up to 13th place with 28 points, now four points clear of the drop zone.
For Wolfsburg, the defeat deepens their struggles, extending their winless streak to 10 matches.
They remain stuck in 17th place on 21 points, with relegation concerns growing as the season nears its conclusion.
Bremen will aim to keep their momentum going when they welcome RB Leipzig on April 4, while Wolfsburg face a tough test away at Bayer Leverkusen as they fight to stay up.
