Bundesliga: Augsburg stun Frankfurt 4-1 in comeback win

Augsburg produced a stunning second-half comeback to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 at Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday, turning a difficult first half into a convincing away victory in the Bundesliga.

Frankfurt made the brighter start and took the lead after just six minutes when Jonathan Burkardt headed home Younes Ebnoutalib’s cross.

The hosts dominated possession and created several opportunities before the interval, but they were unable to extend their advantage as Augsburg struggled to threaten in the final third.

The visitors returned from the break with a completely different approach and levelled almost immediately.

An Elias Baum own goal in the 46th minute brought Augsburg back into the contest.

Just a minute later, Robin Fellhauer completed the turnaround, finishing from close range to put Augsburg ahead.

Frankfurt attempted to respond, but Augsburg grew in confidence and became increasingly dangerous on the counter.

Alexis Claude-Maurice, introduced from the bench, added a third in the 65th minute after combining effectively with Han-Noah Massengo.

Fabian Rieder then put the result beyond doubt in the 89th minute, curling a superb free-kick into the net to complete the 4-1 victory.

Despite Frankfurt enjoying 60 per cent possession and finishing with 22 shots to Augsburg’s 17, the hosts struggled to make their dominance count.

They also missed three big chances during the game.

Augsburg, meanwhile, became more threatening after the interval, registering 14 second-half shots and seven attempts on target.

Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen was central to the visitors’ success, making several important saves to prevent Frankfurt from getting back into the game.

Burkardt was Frankfurt’s standout performer despite the defeat, while Raphael Onyedika also worked hard in midfield.

Robin Koch made several defensive interventions as the hosts searched unsuccessfully for a way back.

For Augsburg, Rieder’s goal capped an impressive individual performance, while Claude-Maurice made an immediate impact after coming on.

Chrislain Matsima was also influential defensively as Augsburg held firm under pressure.

The victory gives Augsburg an early boost in the Bundesliga, while Frankfurt will be left frustrated after failing to turn their first-half dominance and numerous chances into a positive result.
