EPL: Hull City hold Aston Villa to goalless draw

Hull City maintained their unbeaten return to the Premier League after playing out a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

The Tigers, who had already stunned Manchester United and defeated Coventry City this season, produced another impressive display to frustrate Unai Emery’s side and extend their positive start to the campaign.

Villa created the better opportunities early on but struggled to find the finishing touch.

George Hemmings forced Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis into action in the 13th minute, while Ross Barkley also came close with a long-range effort.

Hull gradually grew into the contest and threatened from the flanks, with Oli McBurnie causing problems for the Villa defence.

Mohamed Belloumi and Regan Slater also tested the visitors with efforts from distance.

Villa increased the pressure after the break, with John McGinn and Emiliano Buendia both wasting promising opportunities as Emery’s team searched for their first Premier League goal of the season.

Hull came closest to breaking the deadlock when Belloumi unleashed a powerful left-footed strike that beat goalkeeper Zion Suzuki but crashed against the crossbar.

Both managers made several substitutions in the closing stages as they pushed for a winner, but neither side could find the breakthrough.

The result leaves Hull unbeaten after their opening matches and underlines their impressive adaptation to life back in the top flight.

For Villa, however, it was another frustrating outing as they collected their first point of the campaign but remain without a Premier League goal.

Emery’s side will now turn their attention to the Champions League, with a trip to Club Brugge awaiting them on Tuesday.
