EPL: Gyökeres bags brace as Arsenal thrash Fulham 3-0

Viktor Gyökeres delivered a clinical first-half brace as Arsenal powered past Fulham with a commanding 3-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium, sending a strong statement in the Premier League title race.

Bukayo Saka, making his first start since the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City on March 22, played a decisive role in the breakthrough.

The England winger set up Gyökeres for the opener in the ninth minute before getting on the scoresheet himself five minutes before the interval.

Arsenal tightened their grip on the contest in first-half stoppage time when Gyökeres rose to meet Leandro Trossard’s cross, heading home his second of the night to cap a dominant opening 45 minutes.

The win sees Mikel Arteta’s side move six points clear at the top, boasting a slightly superior goal difference, although they have played two games more than Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s men now face crucial fixtures against Everton and Brentford as they attempt to close the gap.

For Arsenal, this was a performance full of authority, a stark contrast to recent nervy displays at the Emirates.

With their long wait for a league title stretching back 22 years, the Gunners showed composure and attacking fluency when it mattered most.

Saka’s return from an Achilles injury proved pivotal. After easing back with substitute appearances, he made an immediate impact, creating the opener with a sharp piece of skill to evade Raúl Jiménez before setting up Gyökeres for a simple finish.

The hosts continued to dominate, pinning Fulham deep inside their own half. Riccardo Calafiori thought he had doubled the lead midway through the first half, but his effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Arsenal eventually found their second in the 40th minute. Gyökeres combined neatly with Eberechi Eze before feeding Saka, who beat Bernd Leno at the near post to extend the advantage.

Moments later, the Gunners struck again. Trossard surged forward unchallenged and delivered a pinpoint cross that Gyökeres nodded home to seal his brace before the break.

With one eye on their upcoming Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid, Arteta made several changes after the interval.

Saka was withdrawn at half-time, while Gyökeres was later denied a hat-trick by a fine save from Leno before also being substituted, along with Declan Rice.

Fulham showed brief signs of resistance in the second half. David Raya produced a solid save to deny Timothy Castagne, while former Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe fired into the side netting. Calafiori also came close again, heading against the crossbar from a corner.

Despite the lack of further goals, Arsenal remained in full control to secure a vital three points.

With fixtures against West Ham, Burnley and Crystal Palace still to come, belief is growing that the club can finally end its long wait for a Premier League crown, but the pressure now shifts firmly onto Manchester City to respond.
