Bayern Munich edged out Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in a pulsating Klassiker at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday, with Harry Kane striking twice and Joshua Kimmich delivering the decisive blow in a dramatic finale.
The hosts drew first blood in the 26th minute when Nico Schlotterbeck powered home a towering header from a pinpoint free-kick by Daniel Svensson.
The goal carried an air of controversy, as Schlotterbeck had earlier escaped with just a yellow card following a rash challenge on Josip Stanisic after a VAR review.
Dortmund looked dangerous on the counter before the break, but Bayern emerged sharper in the second half.
Their response arrived within 10 minutes, as Kane expertly volleyed in after Serge Gnabry cushioned a delicate chipped pass from Kimmich into his path.
The contest swung further in Bayern’s favour in the 68th minute when Schlotterbeck brought down Stanisic inside the box.
Kane stepped up and converted from the spot, squeezing his penalty past Gregor Kobel despite the goalkeeper getting a firm hand to it.
Yet Dortmund refused to fade. With seven minutes left, Svensson produced a stunning volley to level the score, igniting the home crowd and setting up a frantic finale.
The Klassiker then turned into an end-to-end spectacle. Bayern surged forward once more, and Kimmich settled the contest in style, guiding a superb side-footed volley into the top corner after a loose clearance fell invitingly his way.
MVP: Kane’s brace a clinical volley and a nerveless penalty, underlined his influence, while his tireless hold-up play continually eased pressure on the visitors.
Schlotterbeck, despite getting on the scoresheet, endured a mixed evening, fortunate to avoid dismissal and ultimately guilty of the decisive foul that handed Bayern their edge.
