Bundesliga: Dortmund, Leipzig play 2-2 draw

Substitute Fabio Silva rescued a dramatic point for Borussia Dortmund deep into stoppage time as they battled back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena.

Leipzig looked firmly in control at the break thanks to a clinical first-half brace from Christoph Baumgartner.

The Austrian opened the scoring in the 20th minute after Yan Diomande breezed past Julian Ryerson and drilled in a low cross that Baumgartner cleverly steered home with the outside of his boot.

The pattern repeated before half-time. David Raum delivered another dangerous ball from the left, and Baumgartner was again perfectly positioned to guide his finish beyond Gregor Kobel, doubling the hosts’ advantage.

Dortmund responded after the interval and found a route back into the contest in fortunate fashion.

Ramy Bensebaini’s flick caused confusion in the Leipzig defence, with the ball glancing off Willi Orban before bouncing in off Romulo for an own goal.

Head coach Niko Kovac turned to his bench in search of inspiration, introducing Julian Brandt, Silva and Karim Adeyemi. The changes proved decisive.

In the fifth minute of added time, Adeyemi’s composure in the box created the opening for Silva, who fired home the equaliser to stun the home crowd.

There was nearly a remarkable late winner for Dortmund moments later, but Brandt, after timing his run to beat the offside trap, opted to shoot straight at Maarten Vandevoordt instead of squaring to the unmarked Adeyemi.

The draw leaves Dortmund eight points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, who edged Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 earlier in the day.
