Borussia Dortmund cut into Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga lead after cruising to a comfortable 3-0 win over Union Berlin at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei.
Emre Can, Nico Schlotterbeck and Maximilian Beier were all on target as Niko Kovač’s side closed the gap on the champions to eight points, taking advantage of Bayern’s surprise defeat to Augsburg earlier on Saturday, their first league loss of the campaign.
Dortmund set the tone early, opening the scoring inside 10 minutes. Serhou Guirassy was brought down by Frederik Rønnow in the box, and Can made no mistake from the spot, calmly rolling his penalty home.
Union Berlin tried to respond, with Andrej Ilić heading a promising chance wide from close range, while at the opposite end Fabio Silva dragged an effort just past the post.
The visitors doubled their advantage shortly after the restart. Julian Ryerson’s deep corner was powered goalwards by Schlotterbeck, and although Rønnow got a touch, he could only divert the header into the roof of the net.
Guirassy later missed a gilt-edged opportunity, volleying over from inside the six-yard area, but Dortmund ensured there would be no late drama.
With six minutes remaining, Jobe Bellingham picked out Beier, who drilled a precise finish across Rønnow and into the far corner to wrap up the points.
