Ligue 1: Lorient stun Monaco 3-1 in first away win

Lorient finally ended their wait for a Ligue 1 away victory at the ninth attempt, claiming a memorable 3-1 success over AS Monaco and deepening the hosts’ troubles with a seventh loss in eight league outings.

Monaco came into the contest on the back of three straight defeats before the winter break, a run that was beginning to seriously undermine their hopes of finishing in the European places.

Playing earlier than their rivals this round, Les Monegasques were eager to apply early pressure on the top six.

Aleksandr Golovin tried to lead by example after 15 minutes, weaving his way into the penalty area before firing straight at Yvon Mvogo from close range.

Lorient responded soon after through Pablo Pagis, who created space inside the box and sent a left-footed strike just wide, a sign that the visitors were growing in confidence.

The away side remained competitive and ended the first half on top, producing the more threatening moments in the final third.

Bamba Dieng tested Philipp Köhn with a powerful drive from the edge of the area, and shortly afterwards Lorient thought they had taken the lead.

A sharp exchange between Pagis and Dieng down the left ended with the striker sweeping the ball home, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside after a teammate obstructed Köhn’s line of sight.

Monaco struggled to create clear chances after the break, with their best opening before the hour mark coming when Maghnes Akliouche’s miscued touch looped over Mvogo and landed on the roof of the net.

Fuelled by frustration from the earlier disallowed goal, Dieng eventually broke the deadlock in the 69th minute. He spun away from Eric Dier, surged clear on goal and calmly finished to give Lorient a deserved lead, his second strike in as many matches.

The advantage was short-lived, though, as Monaco finally found a response eight minutes later. Ansu Fati levelled the scores, converting at the second attempt after Mvogo had produced an outstanding initial save.

Despite Monaco dominating possession in the closing stages and pinning Lorient back, it was the visitors who struck decisively. With five minutes remaining, Jean-Victor Makengo’s effort took a deflection and crept into the bottom corner to restore Lorient’s lead.

Moments later, Dermane Karim added a third with a composed curling finish, sealing a famous away win.

The result leaves Monaco languishing in ninth place, while Lorient move up to 12th, just a point behind their hosts after a night to remember for Les Merlus.
