Auxerre secured a 3-1 away victory over Le Havre in Ligue 1 on Sunday, with Danny Namaso scoring twice and providing an assist to inspire the visitors at Stade Océane.
Namaso delivered an outstanding performance as Auxerre proved more clinical in front of goal to claim all three points despite facing sustained pressure from the hosts.
The forward opened the scoring in the 40th minute after receiving a pass from Kévin Danois before finishing from a tight angle to give Auxerre a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Auxerre doubled their advantage in the 61st minute when Namaso converted a pass from Romain Faivre to complete his brace.
Le Havre responded five minutes later through Rayan Fofana, who finished a counter-attacking move after combining with substitute Hakim Dongopandji to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
However, Auxerre restored their two-goal cushion in the 80th minute when Faivre found the net from the edge of the penalty area after being set up by Namaso.
Despite enjoying more possession and registering more shots, Le Havre struggled to convert their opportunities as Auxerre made better use of their chances.
The hosts had 52 per cent possession and recorded 15 shots, compared with Auxerre’s 13, while both teams managed six shots on target.
Auxerre, however, recorded a higher expected goals figure of 2.73 against Le Havre’s 1.41, reflecting their greater efficiency in the decisive moments.
Le Havre also won more corners, seven to four, but Auxerre’s defensive resilience helped them withstand the pressure.
Goalkeeper Paul Nardi played a crucial role in the victory, making six saves to keep Le Havre at bay, while Auxerre recorded 41 clearances as they defended their advantage.
Namaso’s contribution extended beyond his two goals, as the forward also provided an assist, created three key chances and won 11 of his 22 duels.
Faivre also impressed with a goal and an assist, while Danois contributed an assist and three key passes to help Auxerre secure the victory.
The result highlighted Auxerre’s attacking efficiency and defensive discipline, while Le Havre were left to rue their failure to make their territorial advantage count.
