EPL: Leeds hold Man Utd hold to 1-1 draw

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke finally avoided defeat against Manchester United in his managerial career as the bitter rivals settled for a lively 1-1 Premier League draw at Elland Road, a result that stretched the hosts’ unbeaten run to seven matches.

Despite sharing the same top-flight stage in just four of the past 22 seasons, the intensity of this historic fixture was unmistakable, with a charged atmosphere greeting both sides under the winter sun.

Leeds started with purpose and energy, but it was United who thought they had struck first when Matheus Cunha produced a stunning volley.

However, celebrations were cut short after the effort was ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Clear-cut chances were scarce in a fiercely contested midfield battle, although Leeds went close when Anton Stach delivered an inviting cross from the right that Dominic Calvert-Lewin glanced onto the far post.

Lucas Perri was the first goalkeeper called into serious action, producing a superb reflex save to deny Leny Yoro from close range after the defender flicked a header goalwards.

United finished the half strongly as Cunha and Patrick Dorgu both fired off target, but Leeds’ defensive resilience remained evident, with only two Premier League sides conceding fewer first-half goals this season.

Still, the hosts’ failure to test the goalkeeper before the interval left Daniel Farke and the home crowd frustrated.

The pattern continued after the break, with Senne Lammens alert to push away Gabriel Gudmundsson’s effort at the near post as openings remained limited.

The breakthrough eventually came through a defensive lapse from United’s Ayden Heaven, who lost out to Brenden Aaronson in a race for a loose ball.

The American made no mistake, calmly finishing to score his eighth goal in his last nine Leeds strikes at Elland Road.

That goal extended United’s poor defensive run on the road, marking a 15th consecutive league away match in which they had conceded, their longest such streak since 1986. The visitors responded swiftly, though.

Substitute Joshua Zirkzee made an instant impact, setting up Cunha, whose effort squeezed past Perri and over the line to restore parity.

United pushed hard for a winner late on, with Benjamin Sesko firing wide and Cunha rattling the post, while Joel Piroe curled an effort over at the other end. In the end, neither side could find a decisive moment.

The result means Leeds have now won just one of their last 20 Premier League encounters with United and sit eight points clear of the relegation zone.

For Ruben Amorim’s side, it was a missed opportunity to climb into the top four, extending a run of just one win in five league matches despite maintaining their unbeaten record against promoted teams, now standing at 26 games.
