Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake has appealed to Ghana’s President, John Mahama, for leniency following the arrest of a fan who discharged a firearm during his concert in Accra.
The incident came up during a courtesy visit by the singer to the Ghanaian leader while he was in the country for the 2025 AfroFuture Ghana festival, where he headlined the opening day of the event at the El-Wak Stadium.
A video from the meeting, which has since gone viral on social media, shows Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade, entering the room with members of his team and exchanging pleasantries with President Mahama and his associates.
During the interaction, the president jokingly referenced the recent security incident at the concert.
“So he is the one the guy fired the gun for?” Mahama asked, drawing nods from Asake’s entourage.
Reacting to the confirmation, the president remarked humorously, “And he ended up in trouble,” prompting laughter in the room.
Taking advantage of the light-hearted moment, Asake expressed regret over the incident and pleaded on behalf of the suspect, describing the act as a result of excessive excitement rather than malicious intent.
In response, Mahama acknowledged the appeal but emphasized the rule of law.
“Don’t worry about it. The law is the law,” the president said.
Recall that a man was filmed during a street gathering in Accra appealing to President Mahama, Randy Abbey, and Muntaka for a special gunshot salute in honor of his brother “Asake”
The fan was arrested for the illegal possession and discharge of a firearm at a public event, an offence under Ghanaian law.
Also present at the meeting were Ghanaian actor and politician John Dumelo, as well as businessman Ibrahima Mahama.
Asake rose to prominence in 2020 following the success of his hit single Lady and signed to YBNL Nation in February 2022. Since then, he has released three studio albums — Mr Money With The Vibes (2022), Work of Art (2023) and Lungu Boy (2024).
The Grammy-nominated artiste remains one of the most influential voices in Afrobeats and was nominated for the 2025 Grammy Award in the Best African Music Performance category, which was won by fellow Nigerian singer Tems.
The singer recently confirmed that he has relocated to Los Angeles, United States, as part of his expanding international career.
