Leeds United delivered their finest performance of the season with a commanding 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Elland Road, lifting themselves out of the Premier League’s relegation zone.
Jaka Bijol gave the hosts an early advantage with his first goal for the club, before Ao Tanaka unleashed a spectacular strike into the bottom corner two minutes before half-time, also his first of the season.
Chelsea briefly pulled one back after the restart through substitute Pedro Neto, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin restored Leeds’ two-goal cushion, helping Daniel Farke’s side end a four-game losing streak and ease mounting pressure on the manager.
The Londoners had arrived at Elland Road on the back of a 3-0 win over Barcelona and a resilient 1-1 draw with Arsenal while down to ten men, yet they were caught cold in Yorkshire, losing ground to league leaders Arsenal and Manchester City.
A historic rivalry dating back to the late 1960s set the tone for a fiery atmosphere, and Leeds wasted no time taking control.
Anton Stach’s corner found Bijol, whose thundering header was too powerful for Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, giving the home side a sixth-minute lead.
Leeds dominated the opening 20 minutes, creating further opportunities through Pascal Struijk and Tanaka, before Chelsea slowly began to settle.
Their first real chance came on 39 minutes when Liam Delap’s effort was comfortably collected by Leeds’ keeper Lucas Perri.
Having struggled in recent matches to hold onto leads after scoring first, Leeds doubled their advantage two minutes before half-time.
Lukas Nmecha’s pressing win in Chelsea’s half fell to Tanaka, who fired an unstoppable 25-yard strike into the corner.
Chelsea pulled a goal back five minutes into the second half when Jamie Gittens found Neto at the far post, marking his fifth league goal of the season.
Leeds responded quickly, but Nmecha’s strike was ruled out for offside. Chelsea made tactical changes, bringing on Alejandro Garnacho and Cole Palmer, with Palmer missing a clear chance from Garnacho’s cross.
Leeds restored their two-goal lead in the 72nd minute after Tosin Adarabioyo’s back-pass to Sánchez fell short. Noah Okafor challenged, and the ball squirmed loose for Calvert-Lewin to slot home.
Despite Chelsea enjoying plenty of possession in the final stages, Leeds held firm, with Gabriel Gudmundsson and Okafor missing further chances.
The win marked Leeds’ first league victory since late October and a vital three points in their fight to climb the table.
