FC Kairat and Cyprus’ Pafos FC battled to a goalless stalemate in a fiercely contested UEFA Champions League clash at the Central Stadium in Almaty, according to Kazinform News Agency.
Both sides entered the match eager to secure their maiden victory in the group stage, but despite plenty of energy and intent, neither team could find the back of the net.
Kairat made several adjustments to their lineup, with goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov returning between the posts after recovering from injury.
The visitors suffered an early setback when João Correia was shown a straight red card in the fourth minute for a reckless challenge on Luís Mata, leaving Pafos to play nearly the entire match with ten men.
Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, the Kazakh champions dominated possession and kept pressing high.
Valeriy Gromyko went close in the 13th minute with a shot that sailed narrowly over, while Dastan Satpaev’s dazzling run and cross in the 31st minute failed to find a teammate.
Pafos, though a man down, looked dangerous on the counterattack. Anarbekov stood tall in goal, pulling off a series of crucial saves, including one brave stop that deflected off his face, to keep his side in contention.
The intensity remained high after the restart, but both teams struggled to convert their chances as the deadlock persisted until the final whistle.
Nearly 17,000 fans packed into the Almaty arena, urging Kairat on, but they left without a goal to celebrate.
The result means both Champions League debutants are still without a win as the group stage continues.
