Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has emphasized the pivotal role of Ademola Lookman in the national team, highlighting his exceptional quality as indispensable.
Lookman featured for the Super Eagles in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clashes against Rwanda and South Africa, despite not having played for Atalanta in Serie A amid his recent transfer saga.
In an exclusive conversation with AfricaFoot, Chelle commended Lookman’s resilience and professionalism during a challenging period.
“From what I understand, Lookman was meant to transfer last summer, but his management declined, which understandably impacted him,” Chelle revealed.
“He is a remarkable player—quiet, introverted, and composed, rarely showing his emotions. Both his management and our coaching staff recognized that the team needed him on the field, and he needed to play.”
Addressing skeptics who questioned Lookman’s inclusion, Chelle added, “For a player of his caliber, it would have been impossible to leave him out. He has been training hard and is in excellent condition. Ademola is a consummate professional who sets high standards for himself.”
Chelle further explained that he had a prior discussion with Lookman before the squad gathering and had complete confidence in him.
“Initially, I expected he could only manage around thirty minutes due to his lack of match rhythm. But it’s in the best interest of both the club and the player that Ademola returns to action fully.”
