Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman, endured a quiet night as Atlético Madrid were edged 1–0 by Arsenal in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.
Arsenal’s 2–1 aggregate victory booked their place in the final for the first time in 20 years, with Bukayo Saka scoring the only goal of the night just before half-time after Leandro Trossard’s effort was parried.
Lookman, who was named in Diego Simeone’s starting XI, struggled to make a significant impact on proceedings.
Operating mainly from the flank, he was closely marked and effectively neutralised by Arsenal’s defensive setup, limiting his involvement in the final third.
The Nigerian international was substituted just before the hour mark, with Nahuel Molina introduced as Atlético attempted to add more attacking thrust.
By the time he left the pitch, he had offered little attacking threat, with no decisive contribution in terms of goals or key chances created.
Lookman had come into the semi-final tie following a minor fitness concern picked up ahead of the first leg, which slightly affected his rhythm going into the crucial double-header.
He has, however, remained a consistent feature for Atlético Madrid in this season’s Champions League campaign, contributing across multiple appearances as the Spanish side progressed to the semi-final stage.
Notably, his last Champions League goal came in the quarter-final of the competition against Barcelona, a strike that helped Atlético on their path to the last four and ultimately set up this showdown with Arsenal.
Bukayo Saka’s decisive finish proved the difference as Arsenal advanced to the final, where they will face either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on May 30, chasing their first-ever Champions League title.
