Manchester United legend turned pundit, Gary Neville, has shared his thoughts on Arsenal’s Premier League title chances after their dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
The Gunners produced an impressive display in the opening half, with Eberechi Eze forcing two fine saves from Nick Pope before Nick Woltemade broke the deadlock for the Magpies.
After the interval, Pope once again denied Arsenal by keeping out Jurrien Timber’s effort, but the pressure eventually told.
Mikel Merino, who had struggled in previous outings, rose to the occasion in the 84th minute with a precise header to level the score.
Moments later, Gabriel Magalhaes sealed the turnaround with another towering header from a corner.
Neville, speaking on Sky Sports (via arsenalnews.co.uk), was full of admiration for Arsenal’s resilience and the quality of their squad under Mikel Arteta.
The 50-year-old insisted the Premier League crown will be a two-horse race.
“Mikel Arteta has got a brilliant squad. He’s got a brilliant squad, I think he’s got the best squad in the league and maybe the best team in the league.
“I say that quietly because Liverpool are excellent. There are only two teams who can win this league, Liverpool and Arsenal I don’t think anyone else can.
“A week ago the glass was half empty, now it’s more than half full. Liverpool lose, Arsenal win in stunning fashion.
“They deserve it, they were the better football team. [Arteta] made really good subs, he started with a strong team. That will give them huge confidence.
“You shouldn’t have swing weekends this early. But the Liverpool players sitting at home watching this will perhaps sink slightly.”
