19-year-old reckless driver injures three cops, caught with drugs – Police

A 19-year-old driver, Nsikak Okon, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force after a dangerous driving episode in Benin City, Edo State, which left three police officers injured.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspect was driving a heavily tinted vehicle without number plates when he first encountered police officers on routine duty. Rather than stop, Okon allegedly sped off in a reckless manner, endangering lives on the road.

“You were driving a fully and heavily tinted vehicle without number plates. You met police officers on the road and sped past in a very reckless manner,” Hundeyin stated in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday.

The police spokesperson explained that the suspect later returned to the same area at high speed, nearly hitting an officer before allegedly running into three officers on a subsequent pass.

“In what appears to be a deliberate act, you came back again with the same reckless speed, this time successfully knocking down three officers,” Hundeyin said.

He disclosed that two of the injured officers have since been treated and discharged, while one officer remains hospitalised and is receiving medical care.

Hundeyin added that the suspect’s actions caused further damage as he allegedly rammed into other vehicles during the chase before he was eventually intercepted and arrested by the police.

A search conducted on the vehicle after his arrest reportedly led to the recovery of substances suspected to be illicit drugs.

“You proceeded to damage other people’s vehicles before you were eventually apprehended. Upon searching your vehicle, substances suspected to be hard drugs were found,” the police spokesperson revealed.

Condemning the incident, Hundeyin questioned the suspect’s actions, saying, “Why have you decided to start your 2026 like this, 19-year-old Nsikak Okon?”

The police said investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be charged to court after the completion of inquiries.
