Wike confident Tinubu’s intervention will end Rivers crisis

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has voiced strong confidence that the prolonged political tensions in Rivers State may soon come to an end, following a fresh intervention by President Bola Tinubu.

Wike spoke to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday after inspecting ongoing projects across the FCT.

He highlighted the president’s role as a unifying leader, saying his involvement was crucial in resolving the rift between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state.

He said, “I believe that by the grace of God, this will be the last time the president will be bothered with this issue and that this will be the last time the Rivers people will need to hear this kind of discord.”

Emphasising the importance of the president’s directive, Wike added that “the president is the father of the nation, and when a father speaks, his children must listen and do the needful to ensure peace and progress.”

Speaking on the expected outcome of the truce and the roles of both the Rivers State House of Assembly and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the minister expressed confidence that all parties would comply.

He said, “The House of Assembly will do what they are supposed to do, and I am confident that the governor will also carry out the acts required of him to ensure this peace is sustainable.”

Wike stressed that restoring stability in the state remains the top priority, adding that “the most important thing is for Rivers State to move forward, and we are grateful to Mr President for his tireless commitment to ensuring that we reach this understanding.”

The Rivers State House of Assembly, widely seen as loyal to Wike, had recently initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.

In a bid to ease the tensions, President Tinubu on Monday invited both Wike and the governor to the Presidential Villa for talks aimed at resolving the dispute.
