Prosecutors in the United States will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner if he is convicted of killing his parents, Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner.
Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the decision followed a “rigorous review” of the case and consideration of the wishes of the Reiner family.
He disclosed that prosecutors had spoken with Nick’s siblings, who expressed their positions clearly.
“We did speak with Nick Reiner’s siblings (and) they made their views very clear,” Hochman told reporters ahead of a pretrial hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
With the death penalty ruled out, prosecutors said the maximum sentence Nick Reiner could receive if convicted would be life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Hochman also disclosed on Tuesday that the trial would not commence in 2026.
Reiner, 33, has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges against him.
Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead at their Los Angeles home last year after suffering multiple stab wounds.
Their daughter, Romy, reportedly discovered their bodies on December 14. The Los Angeles County medical examiner said the couple died from “multiple sharp force injuries.”
Rob Reiner, 78, was known for directing acclaimed films including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and Stand By Me.
His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 70, was an actress, photographer and producer who founded Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company.
