The United Kingdom has announced the appointment of Mr Peter Vowles as its new High Commissioner to Nigeria, with his tenure expected to begin in September 2026.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, noting that Vowles will succeed Dr Richard Montgomery CMG.
According to the statement, “Mr Peter Vowles has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in succession to Dr Richard Montgomery CMG.”
It added that, “Mr Vowles will take up his appointment during September 2026.”
Vowles is a career diplomat with more than two decades of experience across Africa and Asia. He is currently serving as the British High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023.
His extensive career in diplomacy includes several senior roles within the FCDO and its predecessor, the Department for International Development.
These include serving as FCDO Transformation Director between 2022 and 2023, and as British Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.
From 2018 to 2021, he was Director for Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories at DFID, while earlier postings saw him serve as Country Director for DFID in Kenya, Deputy Country Director in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Governance and Security Team Leader in Afghanistan.
He also worked in India as Head of Global Partnerships and held development roles in Bangladesh, including as a World Bank Health Adviser and Population and Health Programme Director.
According to the FCDO, “His diplomatic and development career spans over two decades, with key roles in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and its predecessor, the Department for International Development (DFID).”
Vowles’ early career included work with the UK National Health Service Management Training Scheme, Raleigh International, and education and development programmes in Zimbabwe.
The UK government said his appointment reflects continued diplomatic engagement with Nigeria ahead of his assumption of duty later in 2026.
