UCL: Roma hold Fenerbahce to 1-1 draw

Roma opened their Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce in Istanbul on Thursday, with Bryan Cristante and Archie Brown getting on the scoresheet.

The Italian side, returning to the competition after a seven-year absence, enjoyed a strong start and controlled much of the possession at the Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

Roma took the lead in the 39th minute when Donyell Malen cut in from the left before finding Cristante, who fired a low right-footed effort through a crowded penalty area and into the bottom corner.

Roma came close to doubling their advantage shortly afterwards, but Wesley failed to make proper contact with a cross from Paulo Dybala, sending his volley wide of the target.

Fenerbahce responded immediately after the restart, drawing level in the 48th minute through Brown.

The defender beat the offside trap before delicately lifting the ball over advancing Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar following a clever pass from Mason Greenwood.

The Turkish hosts grew stronger as the match progressed, with Svilar making an important save to deny Muriqi.

Roma also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty when Dybala went down under a challenge from Milan Skriniar.

Fenerbahce nearly snatched all three points late on when Nathan Ake headed a free-kick against the woodwork, while Svilar produced another impressive stop to keep out a deflected effort from Oguz Aydin.

The points were eventually shared as both teams settled for a draw.
