Two killed as police arrest suspects over arson, stabbing in Jigawa

Two people have died in separate incidents involving arson and stabbing in Jigawa State, while police have arrested two suspects in connection with the cases.

The Jigawa State Police Command said the suspects were arrested for alleged offences including mischief by fire, culpable homicide and grievous hurt in Gwaram and Dutse Local Government Areas.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, disclosed this in a statement issued in Dutse on Wednesday.

Adam said the first incident occurred on September 29 in Nassarawa village, Gwaram LGA, where 27-year-old Abbas Ibrahim allegedly entered his elder brother Basiru Shuaibu’s residence at about 11:30pm by jumping over the fence.

Following police investigations, Ibrahim was arrested in Sara town, Gwaram LGA, and was subsequently arraigned in court.

In a separate incident in Dutse LGA, police arrested 20-year-old Lawisi Safiyanu for allegedly stabbing 25-year-old Muhammad Abba.

Adam said the incident occurred on October 1 following an argument over a N500 balance from the purchase of a mobile phone.

According to the police, Abba had bought the handset for N1,500 and paid N1,000, leaving N500 outstanding.

The disagreement reportedly escalated, leading to Safiyanu allegedly stabbing Abba with a knife.

The victim was taken to Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital in Dutse, where he later died.

The PPRO said the suspect was arrested and the knife allegedly used in the attack was recovered.

He added that investigation into the case had been completed and the suspect charged to court.

Adam quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, as urging residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

The Commissioner also advised residents to report suspicious activities, threats and disputes promptly to the police or other security agencies.
