United States President, Donald Trump, has issued a stern warning to Iran, urging Tehran to rein in Hezbollah’s activities in Lebanon or face tougher military consequences.
According to AFP, Trump made the remarks on Sunday as high-level talks between American and Iranian officials got underway in Switzerland, amid renewed concerns over stability in the Middle East.
“Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“If they don’t, we’ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!” he added.
The warning comes as tensions continue to simmer following recent confrontations between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon, threatening a fragile peace arrangement between Washington and Tehran.
Reports indicate that at least 30 people lost their lives in Israeli strikes targeting eastern and southern Lebanon on Saturday.
The violence later eased after Israeli troops were instructed to cease hostilities.
The memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran on Wednesday contains commitments aimed at ending hostilities across several conflict zones, including Lebanon.
Addressing participants at the start of the Switzerland talks, US Vice President JD Vance expressed confidence that efforts to sustain the ceasefire were yielding positive results.
“I’ve seen great progress in the last just couple of days in ensuring that the
ceasefire holds in Lebanon,” Vance said.
“We’re all working towards regional peace. I actually feel great about where we are in Lebanon. There’s still some additional work to do, but we’re going to keep on working at it.”
Vance further argued that the Trump administration had helped calm tensions in Lebanon and contributed to broader regional stability in recent months.
The ongoing discussions are expected to centre on preserving the ceasefire, reducing regional friction and expanding diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.
